Become a BCS Volunteer!

WE'RE ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS!

The society was set up in 2001 by a group of friends who wanted to organise social events and activities, but within the framework of a proper society. Since then the society has significantly grown in terms of membership numbers, the variety and number of events organised, the average number of people at each event, and the amounts of money raised for Chinese community charitable causes. However,  to keep up with our growth, we invite you to join our group of volunteers and organisers!

WHY VOLUNTEER TO HELP THE BCS?

The BCS totally depends on unpaid voluntary help to achieve its aims!

The BCS is run in an informal, friendly and relaxed manner. Helping out is a great way of getting to know the more active members of the society. Additionally there is the real sense of achievement and satisfaction in being part of a team that organises successful events and raises money for charity.

HOW CAN I HELP?

BCS volunteers help out in many different ways. For example, some help us with the skills from their day jobs. We have volunteers who are professional graphic designers, accountants, IT professionals and lawyers. There are also other roles that do not require any professional experience but are equally, if not more, important. For example:

  • Suggesting ideas for events
  • Taking photographs
  • Providing feed-back or making comments on past events
  • Answering email queries
  • Designing event graphics
  • Maintaining our website
  • Helping out with volunteer recruitment
  • Looking for entertainers or venues
  • Approaching companies for sponsorship
  • Promoting our society and events
  • General help and administration during events
  • Absolutely anything else that we cannot predict! (e.g. purchasing a crate of Wagon Wheels and Refreshers for the Skool Disco!)

In other words, anyone can be a volunteer. The main driving principle is that you only need help out with events that you're interested in. Therefore, for example, only people who want to go hiking would actually help organise a hiking trip to Wales.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL THIS TAKE UP?

You may be interested in helping out but perhaps you're concerned about how much time you could realistically commit. Don't worry!

All of our volunteers and executive members have day jobs (some of them very stressful too!) and only help out during our spare time. Some of us will put in more time than others according to our work and other commitments. You can contribute as much or as little as you want to!

If you think you could help us organise an event or two, or if you have an idea for a new event or want to recommend a great venue you know, please get in touch. If you can commit some spare time over a whole year, and would like to help us organise a number of events, perhaps even help us run the BCS as an executive member, even better. We would like to hear from you.

DON'T THE BCS HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS ALREADY?

We have a pool of executive members and volunteers who plan and organise all the events you see on our Events page, but if we want the society to continue to grow, we need more volunteers now!

SO WHAT DO I DO TO VOLUNTEER?

Drop us an email at secretary@britishchinese.org.uk. Our merry band of volunteers meet up for dinner on a relatively regular basis, and you'd be invited to join us. Some of us are are BCS old-timers whilst others would be relatively new to the society, rather like you. So don't worry, we'll make you feel welcomed and part of the team!
